In 1937 H. H. Champlin imported two mares and Fox de Thielt, who was
to become
the herd stallion and the winner of numerous show awards. The
Belgians were sent
to the United States by boat, then by railroad car to Enid.
A barn was built in 1936 that measured 160 feet long and 80 feet wide,
consisting of
concrete floors, beams and walls a foot thick. There was stalls
for two horses
for each one. Each stall had automatic waters. The barn
is two-story featuring a large ramp
from the ground level. Hay trucks could be driven directly into the
top part to be unloaded.
At the time of the Sale, the Herd consisted of 42 animals.
The farm is located three miles west and one mile north of Carrier,
Oklahoma.
My Father was the Farm Manager for this and several other farms owned
by the Champlin Family. This farm is where I lived for
three years.
